Bristol Zoo 6th June 2010

Took advantage of the good weather last sunday and went to Bristol Zoo one of my favorite places in my area.

As you enter the zoo you’ll be greeted by a flock of vibrant flamingos as they wade in their freshwater lagoon enclosure.

Livingstone fruit bats are one of the largest species in the world. They have an average wingspan of around 1.4 metres (four to five feet). However, they are also one of the rarest, and high on the endangered list. They are only found only on two small islands in the Comoros, between Madagascar and Mozambique in the Indian Ocean, where their populations are under threat from severe habitat destruction. At Bristol Zoo, they are working hard to protect this important species. Not the best photo aiming into the sky and sun

Red pandas are an endangered species, native to the mountainous regions of Nepal and southwest China, where it is very cold and snowy. They are perfectly equipped to deal with the cold thanks to their long, thick fur, which also helps protect them against rain. They even have fur on the soles of their feet to keep them warm when walking on snow. Below is Jasmina the red panda. You can see Jasmina in her enclosure on the zoo’s top terrace, where she likes to snooze in her favourite spot – at the top of a tall tree

off to the reptile house next to see snakes and lizards i think i am getting better and shooting through glass but i still cant master getting decent fish photos

outside is the giant tortoise

12.30 pm my favorite time at the zoo is it is feeding time for the gorillas. you get within about 20 feet of them safely seperated by a small lake. great chance to take photos of these fantastic animals.

Gorilla Island is home to six western lowland gorillas: Salome, Romina, Jock, Namoki, Kera and Komale. Their diet is varied and mimics that of gorillas in the wild – 80% vegetables and 20% fruit – with tree branches included on a daily basis. Also, they love a spot of herbal tea and fruit cordial every dayOff to the Lemurs next the  exhibit provides first-class living arrangements for its inhabitants, with indoor and outdoor areas. It also includes a walk-through lemur garden, so you can see these beautiful ring-tailed lemurs in a barrier-free environmentsharing the lemurs area are these animalsnext stop the seals  and penquins and the underwater viewing area (it a female i know cos the mouth is open lol)off to the Meercats next this time lots of baby ones to seeand finally the feeding of the lorikeets

Great blog, and not a wire fence in sight! Unusual for zoo shots.

Well done and thanks

The Meerkat pictures are a delight Nigel.  I thought the first photograph must be you, but I see now it's not!  Lovely blog.  I have many fond memories or Bristol Zoo, we used to visit from school, when I was a child.

Goish its years since I went to Bristol Zoo, probably just 10-12 years old. Thanks for helping to bring back some murky memories.

Fantastic photographs, and great blog.  I'll be aiming to get shots like these next time I visit a zoo as we share the same model of camera.  One question did you use a tripod to take these shots or are they hand held.

regards

Anne

Brilliant, super, great, fantastic blog!!!  Well done, you've certainly done your homework on these animals.  I love the meercats 'simples!!'  Some fantastic shots of all the animals, as Ian says not a fence it sight.  Thank you for all the hard work of putting it together and sharing it with us.

Thanks for all the nice comments perhaps i should have said in the blog some of the text is from the Bristol Zoo website but all the photos are mine taken last sunday.

i use serif software and used the unsharp mask filter to bring out a bit more detail i tip which i was given from a former member who regularly took part in the IHCMAN weekly challenges
