Jon The Graduate
I cannot believe it. My youngest son Jon has just graduated from High School tonight. Where did the time go?
He is a fine young man with many achievements. He is a member of the National Honor Society, The National Society for High School Scholars, Math Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society and was awarded the National High School Orchestra Award. He was a 4 year member and an assistant crew chief for his high school's Stage Crew. He also studied Japanese language for 4 years and was a member of the Japanese Club.
Jon is a musician and plays both viola and violin. It is the great passion of his life. He started his violin studies in the 3rd grade in elementary school and studied violin privately with Orlando Wells from 2002-2004, Melissa Macy from 2004-2007 and studied both violin and viola with Todd Van Beveren from 2007 until June 2011. Jon played with the New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra from 2003-2007 in both the full symphony and chamber orchestras. Jon has played with his High School Orchestra from 2007-2011 and was Concertmaster from 2009-2011. He was a member of The Northern New Jersey Youth Orchestra from 2005-2011 first as a violinist and later as a violist. He was Principal Viola for several seasons and held the John Curry Chair this past year. Jon has also played with the Northern New Jersey Youth Orchestra Alumni Chamber Orchestra and is now a member. Jon has also played professionally and with numerous small group ensembles locally.
Jon will be spending 6 weeks of his summer immediately following graduation at Kinhaven Music School and Camp in Vermont before attending Boyer College of Music at Temple University in Philadelphia starting the fall 2011 semester as a viola/music education major.
Congratulations Jon...We are so very proud of you and we Love you very much.

He has such beautiful eyes but hates having his picture taken. Taken in the summer of 2006.

Jon when he was in middle school as concertmaster. Taken in December 2006 before the Winter Concert.

Jon will "allow" photos to be taken more easily if Missy is involved. Taken in Summer 2007.

The boy and his kitty. Taken in Fall 2007.

3 years later and still inseparable. Taken in 2010.

Jon in profile. Taken in 2010.

Ready to Graduate. The extra pink tassel on the mortar board is for Tri-M Music Honor Society. The gold stole with the School crest is for National Honor Society and the gold chord is for The National Society of High School Scholars.

Jon is pretty easy to spot in the crowd because he is so tall.

Yay! It's official!

Nice memories Laurie.
You are fortunate as my son refuses to have any photos taken. My last one of him was when he was seventeen and he's twenty four.
He also refused to attend any of his graduation ceremonies and told his lecturers not to announce him as he wouldn't be there. He did buy them drinks later but he wouldn't even allow his university any pictures when they profiled him for publicity for a course he was doing. We had nothing to attend, just his certificates to look at when he bothered to collect them.
Make the most of it Laurie, as he will at least continue to perform at concerts. He will have a high public profile. With luck you have more to look forward to.
Lovely set of pictures.

Congratulations to Jon. You must be one proud mum Laurie. A very big event and a milestone to achieve. Both my Sons (27 & 25 ) have Graduated and achieved their Degrees after years of studying hard. My youngest is progressing on the Academic ladder and currently doing his Masters Degree at our local University. Hopefully another Graduation to attend in 2013. It will be another tear in my eye and lump in the throat for it is one of those proud moments in life where all the sacrifices come to fruition and one moment to cherish forever. All the best to you Laurie, Jon and your family. Best Wishes Alison x

How formal - but what happens when he gets out into the big wide world? My daughter's philosophy might help?

Your daughter looks quite comfortable. Jon is heeding that part of the advice at any rate...he's still in bed and it is 15:00...but he was up all night long.
On a serious note you have every reason to be proud. Service to others is noble cause.
My oldest son served in the military for 5 plus years so I know what kind of sacrifice it is.
Jon's plan is to become a teacher when he is finished at University. His first field experience will likely be working with inner city youth.

Well done Jon. Education opens doors on the world.
Proud mother, I should say so, and why not? The children don't achieve without the help of the parents at this level, however clever they may be.
