Gulls of Inchcolm Island
Submitted by mike_k on Fri, 12/08/2011 - 19:55
Hi,
In July we visited friends in Scotland and had a trip out to Inchcolm Island in the Firth of Forth. It has quite a large bird population and it is very easy to get close to the birds, so here are a few shots.

And here's the first....

As it was the breeding season plenty of young gulls about...

and not too frightened.

Able to get fairly close...

..even with Mum around.

But, of course, the adults are very protective so in some areas will dive bomb you....

...quite....

...aggressively....

...then veer away !

Plenty of birds flying around.....

..and easy to get above....

...alongside....

..in flight...

...going away...

..or from below !

Ruined Abbey in the background.

Hello Mike
Sorry for poping in too early. Just a hint, put "under construction" in the heading and folk will not comment until you have finished. Looks bloomin good so far. Keep em coming.
Cheers for now.

Steve - thanks for the comments and for the 'under construction' tip !
I'd put 'to be continued' at the end but your idea was much better.

Great photos and a good story
I could not say why but i like gulls. Clever birds. When they can get something from man they will take it. If we don't provide food they can pretty well take care for themselves in the hardest surrounding.
My favourite photo of your blog is the last. The contrasts are great!

Hi Mike
Glad I popped back, there are some great action shots in here. I often sit and watch gulls for ages, doing acrobatics or just riding the updraught, I love em. (except when they Knick my ice cream!!!)
Nice one Mike, my fave shot is the last one. No action but I like the use with DOF.

Lovely pics taken on what must have been the only day in Scotland that was not raining.Think they are Great Black Backed Gulls to me as the feathers look darker .I hate the birds myself as they are noisy and poo all over my car .Nice blog though.

Hi Mike, Great blog. I have to say gulls are not my favorite bird, we are inundated with them in Aberdeen and they have a huge 'Take-away' called the North Sea but for some strange reason they prefer to hang around gardens. All that said they are beautiful pics and I have a friend visiting from Hungry who is a HUGE fan of them.
Thanks for sharing. Jean
