Wallington in March

Another Wednesday comes around and as usual, I am at Wallington helping around the grounds and in the Walled Garden. The house has opened earlier this year and has new opening times of 12.00 noon to 5.00 pm. It is open everyday apart from a Tuesday.

The events here at Wallington are in full swing and it is such a varied programme each week that sees the visitor numbers record broken each year.

The grounds and in particular the Walled Garden are starting to show their beauty and its wide variety and colourful plant collection.

The snowdrops around the property are disappearing and the daffodils are now starting to flower. The planting has been designed to ensure all year around colour.

The Courtyard at Wallington is a large expanse of grass and is where a lot of the events are staged. At each side of the Courtyard are areas of grass and I was hoping to get a more colourful picture of the daffodils there. Only two flowers out beside the wall!!!!

I made my way through the grounds to the Walled Garden and decided to walk through East Wood via China Pond. On my way I met with the Housekeeper who was looking for daffodils to put in the rooms of the House. She was finding it difficult to collect a good bunch. There are plenty about as this picture shows, it will be great when they flower.

China Pond in East Wood was calm and flat. The mirror like surface gave some pictures with great reflections.

China Pond looking east. The reflections were so good I took a number of pictures.

Lower Terrace. The way the weather has been I think grass cutting will start earlier this year.

Upper Terrace looking back towards the entrance.

Upper Terrace - the urns have been unwrapped from their jackets protecting them from frost. They will soon be planted.

The 'Hot Border'- this will burst into colour in the next few months.

The snowdrops have finished in the Orchard and Nuttery, but soon will be replaced with the colour of daffodils in flower.

Walking to the east end of the Walled Garden I saw a glimpse of yellow!

At last - the pictures of daffodils I have been waiting for!

Looking west.

This area used to have Spanish Bluebells as well as the daffs. Over the last few years they have been removed. Some still remain and can be seen.

Looking back towards the east gate of the Walled Garden, the willow hoops are there to stop people trampling down the flowers.

My final picture of the day. After this we moved benches to different parts of the garden after they were stored for winter. We cut down an old virburnum shrub and cleared the border of leaves. Great weather - sun in the Walled Garden - a great place to spend a day!

I think under the circumstances you did very well in respect of reflections and detail not a lot else you could do, nice russet colour to the I assume beech hedge, various greens of plants and moss and grass, so if people look they will see quite a lot, like from me, regards Leon.

Thank you for your comments.

Another interesting update on how things are going at Wallington. All the hard work that you and your colleagues put in is certainly paying dividends. Thanks for posting.
