The Tale of A Mystical-Master Artist: Closing his eyes, as if to freeze the picture in his mind before transferring it onto the canvas, the Mystical-Master Artist held the brush firmly in his hand, as he dipped its end into the water in a bowl. As the end of the brush touched the water, the ripples caused the water to twirl and turn into a thick cloud of white mist, which then filled the room until nothing was within the Mystical-Master Artist's sight. Only his breath could be heard. When he opened his eyes, the mist had disappeared, and he discovered that he was in the picture that was earlier in his mind. And, the picture was a beach with the rays of the setting sun glowing red over the sky and the water at the far end of the horizon. The end of his brush was still dipped in the water, but this time, it was the water washed ashore from the sea. -by Amilcar Cabral on FB

Hello Phil Turner, bairdy, Peter, David Ritchie, Paul Shade, thank you very much for your inspiring and welcoming comments. I have written and thanked those with contact buttons separately.
There were other images in my mind, but this came to thought after Welsh Jen posted as a possibility in a forum and Vivian L further encouraged it. Thanks to the ladies.

Great shot,. How did you take it?

An excellent entry. The effect of the perspective to foreshorten the image and create the illusion of a giant hand dipping the brush into the lake must have been difficult to do and must have taken several attempts. The use of the fill flash works really well too. I'm sure you've inspired others to try something similar. Good luck.

Hi HPL, No Alan N. hasn't explained it. Was the camera on a tripod and ye walked forward tae get your arm in the shot? Someone else must have pressed the shutter button then? Or did ye get a friend tae go forward and hold the brush?
Ye surely couldn't have taken the shot with yer left hand as your simple compact couldn't zoom so accurately tae include both your hand , the brush and the background, could it ?
Ah do understand both the principles and maths of perspective but ah'm confused with this shot. Can you enlighten me?
Thanks,

Hello TAo2. Thank you for asking. No, no tripod used here, though I have used a tripod and timer only once where both my hands are visible in the image. No one else involved in this image, and what you see is the hand of a 62 year old calligrapher ( that's me, lol).It does take almost a lifetime of practice to be able to hold a brush steadily with its tip in water. Its called "hanging or suspended" style in calligraphy. The ripple can only be caused by a steady hand in a puddle or pool, where the water is still, and must be timely with the shutter.
It's easy, in my opinion to take shots with either hands as long as one can hold the camera steadily. This compact JV 200 is very small, very comfortable for single hand focus and click. The only difficulty I encountered was the low angle, and I had to go on my knees for this shot and you can only view after the shot is taken. And you cant go that low either, as the area is water laden. I have 7 other shots taken at the same time, different angles and a slight variation in composition. So, its a bit of trial and error and judgement does help.
Technically I wouldn't dare utter a word, on how it was done as I am totally new to photography, and any explanation could be totally misleading or disastrous.I hope Angela D, Chris or Ray Fothergill, or any others would stumble upon this, and be able to comment and enlighten further .
Hope this helps! Just give it a try, and after all, its only an image, and when you least expect, you come up with something a little gratifying.
