Thanks for your comments everyone. I was in Trafalgar Square and noticed the sun was beginning to set and looked across at Admiralty Arch and saw this great photo opportunity.
In reply to Barry Jones: I felt that in this instance by leaving the extra black either side helps to draw the eye into the bright centre.

great to have had a camera with you for this shot. Very strong colours, well contrasted. Very good use of foreground. I like the lantern idea and the vegitation on the left; it breaks into the intensity of the sun very well. You have a good eye for the opportunist shot.
