Hi, I might be being a bit daft but if I use a 2x converter on my hs20 what will the full zoom lenght be, some say 60 as in 2x30 but I would have thought it would be less as it would have to be after the lens ( as in, between a camera body and lens to be 60)

I am always confused about adding a teleconverter to this camera. The teleconverters usually cut the light in half or more and you already have 800+mm (35mm equivalent) of reach. If you do, I would be interested in hearing your experiences.
"A teleconverter increases the focal length of your lens. It mounts between you lens and the camera body(though in the case it would be an attachment on the end of the camera). A 2x teleconverter doubles the length of your lens. Thus a 200mm lens becomes a 400mm lens. Teleconverters will tend to soften images and they all cut the amount of light by whatever their factor is. Therefore, a 2x teleconverter takes 2 stops of light."

Yep, I know it will be fitted on the end of the hs20 lens, thats why I'm asking what the zoom length would be as I would have thought it would defo be less than 60x but more than 33x.

I think it would be the same, as both ends of the zoom would be altered by the same amount so it's ratio would not change.
X ( whatever ) is a statement of ratio in maginfication, not reach as far as I'm aware.

Cool, thanks for the input, thinking of getting a 2x or 3x for wild life shots, we live in scotland so there's plenty about, it's just that they tend to be a little bit too far away to get a good shot.

If you introduce a teleconvertor onto any lens you introduce a drop of clarity ( may not be much ) and also a drop in light levels as well as a decrease in aperture. So a x2 teleconvertor when used on a lens that has a maximum aperture of f7.6 extended may find it ceases to be able to focus fast enough to get a clean photo in all but the best of shooting conditions. A lot depends on what you want to shoot and when as to the usefulness.
