Hiya! Do any of you use this process and what sofware can you recommend to achieve good results that are easy to do. I'm talking free software of course!

Rarely use it as I am not keen, but the process can be done several ways. And can be done in most software - so whatever you already have. You will need to select the area that you want as coloured and depending upon the detail in this the tool you use will be of paramount importance. If for instance you are selecting a man's tie, plain colour, the magic selection tool will probably be fine - enlarge the image so that you can see it clearly. If you are selecting a child's dress then using the polygonal selection tool - you can use the shift key to add to your selection and the Alt key to subtract from your selection. Once you have the focus selected invert your selection, choose your method of turning the rest to black and white and then deselect.
If you have photoshop then using a layer mask is probably the easiest way. Duplicate your layers and convert the top layer into Black and white. Then add a mask to the top layer and erase your focus using the black brush (Black should be on top in the left hand icon of black/white). When you invert the Black and white you can replace any of the edges which you have smudged. Continue until the colour that you want is revealed. Enlarging the image helps to get the edges sharp and a hard brush should be used for the edges. When finished Merge layers and it should be done.

Hi Griffin,
Angie has shown the two most used methods for getting the effect. We do have a Photo Feature here in the forum for it http://www.myfinepix.co.uk/article/115/1385 which is also really good.
You asked for a freeware program in which you can do the job. Basically any editing program which allows making a selection allows the first method Angie has described. Any program which allows layers and layer masks does support the second.
Please have a look at http://www.myfinepix.co.uk/forum/3/3171 - an interesting discussions of different programs many of them free. An answer to your question depends on a lot of other points.
Do you just want to do selective colouring one or two times and than forget about it or could this be the start of an editing hobby? Will there be other elements of editing you could be interested in? How good are you with complex software..?
If you plan to do other things with the program as well i would always recommend to get something a bit advanced so that you do not reach the limits of the program too fast.
Interesting softwares could be Paint.Net http://www.getpaint.net/index.html or Gimp http://www.gimp.org/

It can be done on Photobucket, just upload the photo....editi it....and then download it again. I think the method on Photobucket is called "Colour Splash"

Thanks Angie, Uwe and Kev for your replies. I dont have Photoshop, have Gimp but rarely use as it seems too complicated for my simple brain. I've tried the Photbucket tool Kev and that is just what I'm after - BUT it will not save a 7.5mb file after editing only a 300kp file which is not what I'm after.
Using Photobucket this is what I am trying to achieve but it has to save the file in its original size. These sort of prints seem quite popular and I thought I would give it a go. Must keep looking!

Hi Martin,
i think this motif would really be very suited (easy to work on) for Gimp. The area to select would have quite good and distinctive corners.
Some other idea for it - with all the vehicles, cars and boats, on one level it would be a really good motif for some tilt shift job as well

For a cheap -ish programme try PhotoImpact from Corel - very much a WYSIWYG and the selection tool in that is very good and easy to use.

Thanks for your suggestion Chris - I had a look but the max upload image size is too small for good results.
I had a look at Picnic - accessed by Picasa, they have what I am looking for and it saves the edited image back to Picasa and therefore your hard drive at full image size. I need to spend a bit more time on it as it doesnt seem as quick and easy as the Photobucket option.
Still welcome any more suggestions though.
