Picture size

Hi

My HS10 produces jpeg images that average around 3.5mb in size which I have always thought small. I have the camera set on L 4:3 Fine which should give the largest size possible. Am I missing something somewhere?

thats about right for a jpeg.

shoot RAW if you want large file sizes with no data loss due to compression.

if the camera will shoot RAW!

The HS10 does shoot RAW, to access press the menu button then enter the set-up menu, on screen 4 about half way down is the option to shoot RAW, RAW + JPEG or just JPEG.

Shooting RAW gives larger files and also a lot more control when editing.

Yes you can - but not all cameras are covered by the RAW programme in Adobe. This is due to the camera manufacturers not releasing the algorithms for an individual cameras RAW set up. If Adobe don't have the Algorithm they cannot write the software - so you would have to check with the Adobe web site to see if the HS10 is covered. I think that the HS10 is covered now but I am not absolutely sure. Someone who has an HS10 would probably be able to tell you.

Fujifilms Raw file(raf) is enabled in CS5's Camera Raw 6, and Anthony the bigger the files you put onto your PC the slower your editing software will run plus your storage space will soon fill up.If you're only printing upto A4 or showing on a tv/monitor your file size is spot on.Cheers Dave.

Hi

A point that may have been missed is that the jpg file as stored on the camera is a compressed file. When this image is opened on screen in say Photoshop the image size will show nearer to 28mb or more. The file size on either image will vary depending on the content.

A RAW file will record at full size on the camera card using more space and taking longer to process.

To avoid deterioration of the image quality of a jpg any changes should be saved as either a propriety format such as PSD in Photoshop or TIFF which has a more universal acceptance

As always, work on a copy and keep the original safe.

Kind regards,

Chas.
