RAW / RAF resolution only seems to be 1600 by 1200
Submitted by Kim Ayres on Mon, 28/09/2009 - 17:39
Following so many "Once you've done RAW you'll never go back" comments from people I thought I'd give it a try.
However, despite having an 11MP camera, the Finepix Viewer software seems to produce the RAW / RAF images so they are only 1600 x 1200 pixels - or about 2MP by my calculations.
I cannot seem to find anything that allows me to change this - does anyone know what I'm doing wrong, or am I just misunderstanding the whole RAW Conversion thing?
Many thanks

Have you tried processing and converting the files using s7raw (free software)?

The answer is not to use the Finepix viewer but some dedicated Raw software. As Richard says (above) S7Raw will convert RAF files and then you will get the true size of the processed file. An 11 Mp should produce a file in the region of 13 MB. You will have the option of saving as a Tiff (no compression) or a Jpeg (Compressed) this very much depends on what you want to do with the finished photos. I never save as Jpeg as a lot of information is thrown away. This must be your choice, but ideally I would advise saving the processed file as a Tiff and keep a copy of the RAW file.

Be what you are, say what you feel, 'cos those that mind don't matter, and those that matter don't mind.

I use Photoshop Elements 6 to convert my RaF files with adobe 4.6 Camera Raw Plugin, works perfectly.
I use a Fuji S100fs

Can only agree with comments above, I've used both s7raw and adobe raw, never even tried the fuji raw converter - my preference was for s7raw, s7raw also has a driver to view the raw files as thumbnails in the windows file listings.

I used Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Ultimate, and it opens the raw files and can do all the magic bits on them. Fuji raw that comes with the camera is very slow.

The size of the image produced is governed by the the settings you have selected (or the default if you have not altered them) or set 'within' Finepix.
I have been caught on this one before.
