S200EXR RAW Hacked off
Submitted by Samurai_b on Sun, 14/02/2010 - 17:16
I know it's been done to death; and until Adobe update Camera RAW, probably will continue to be.
However, I'm now officially pi55ed. I have a couple of shoots lined up at the end of the week, my first creative sets for months and as I have the S200, I would like to test it out and see how it fares. So I went out today to have a play and just test out the camera on different settings etc.
I come back, all ready to convert the RAF files to TIFFs, update Finepix Viewer and lo. IT DOESENT BLOODY WORK....all I want to do is batch convert the files to TIFFs as (no offence) Finepix Viewer's software is rubbish and slow!
Bah. I have the humph.

I hate to say this.... but why on earth use the Finepix software....? it seems to cause no end of problems for people.
I don't know what software you use for editing.... but have you tried using Adobe's DNG converter? It's a free download and converts RAF files to .dng files which are universally read by photoshop and the like. OK so it takes a few minutes to convert them, but I used it when I got my first Fuji camera, and it solved all my probs.

well one reason is, especially referring back to the s100 when i borrowed one from a camera shop for a test, is that the genuine fuji software has the factory alogrithms in for the conversion what do indeed convert the images better than adobe products. especially the fuji software eeks out a little more detail and manages to control high contrast areas better where ca is likely to occur.
adobe etc have to reverse engineer these alogrithms which while on the face of it work, they are never quite as good as the manufacturers - this is indeed true for other manufacturers too in particular canon, where the adobe software produce coarser images compared to the more detailed but smooth canon dpp pro conversion...

To be honest guys, the ONLY reason I'm even attempting using the Finepix software is that it was alleged to be compatible with the S200 RAW files. I have an S100FS also, and my normal RAW editing software is either Photoshop CS4 or Lightroom.
I would very much like to take your eyes out and rub them with a scouring pad.

A review at this address http://www.shutterbug.com/news/122309fuji/# suggests the following address has the RAW converter http://www.fujifilmusa.com/support/ServiceSupportProduct.do?prodcat=878918.

The Adobe DNG converter does not support RAF files from the S200EXR. It would seem that if Adobe Camera Raw does not support your camera then it follows that the DNG converter will not support it either. As Samurai_b points out, until Adobe updates Camera Raw S200 users will be forced to use the FinePix Viewer software for RAW file manipulation

And unfortunately, even though I have updated the Finepix software to the compatible version - I can only do a straight conversion to TIFF on an individual level. If I try and batch convert them, it just gives an error message and says it's an unsupported file type.
Bah!

Just to let you guys know, that I've managed to get the Fuji RAW conversion running with my S200EXR - great...
...BUT...unfortunately it's actually rubbish! There's hardly any detail in the 100% crops and it's full of odd noise! And that's just a straight RAF to 16bit TIFF.
I shall be going back to my S100FS until Adobe bring out an update, methinks! Shame really, because until this happenes, I can't do an accurate comparision!
Ah well!
If anyone else has any more luck, gimme a shout!

S7Raw used be 'THE' raw conversion program to use with fuji, latest version lists the S200exr as supported.

Bill - you'd be better off asking this question in a separtae thread. But basically, it depends ! There is no set aperture/shutter setting - depends on the light and the effect you are trying to get.
