Thanks guys appreciate your looking and comment.
Steve I do agree with your suggestion of removing the black border. I suppose I wasn't sure how to finish the picture as it had no square edges left.
Jeff I cannot really say how I ended up with the final image as I used several programmes which have different features. Will have to try to back track my steps to be able to recreate another one. First step was to lighten all the darker areas so that the finished image has an even sketch look. Second step was using Paintshop Pro "clarify" and "high pass" filters. After that it was a combination of "pen and ink" and "watercolour" filters in Serif PhotoPlus. A few tweaks with saturation here and there. Quite a few layers were used to test different effects and this enabled fine tuning of opacity and blending modes.
Ian I will post the original image in my gallery within the next day or two to give a comparison
After a while you tend to lose sight of what you were trying to achieve so I'm glad that the overall impression was of a coloured sketch rather than a cartoon effect.
Thanks again for your input.

Nice editing Phil, reminds me of Punch magazine illustrations, a definite thumbs up from me here.

Hi Phil,
sketch effect for me means something which could be achieved really fast when done without a PC.
Your sample is really good. I don't know which program you used for it but perhaps if you could reduce the number of colours even more the sketch element would be more obvious...

Actually Uwe you have hit on a very good point. Reducing the colours may indeed make a good difference and I think that may be why I wasn't sure if I had created a good sketch effect or a cartoon.
Thanks for that thought......I will revisit it when I've a bit of spare time.
