Critique Board?

Hi all,

I learnt quite a bit from some of the comments on some of my photos and I was wondering if we should/could have an advice board/thread?

My idea would be we could add a photo to our gallery that we would like advice on then post its link in the thread for everyone to look at and give their views comments on or even download it and crop it etc and repost it to the thread as an example?  I did think about posting on the thread but would that cause problems?

As you have posted it too the thread there should not be any come back if you don't like the comments obviously it would have to be to the gallery and not on competition entries otherwise you would boost its rating on the most commented on lol

What do you all think?

Allan

Best advice on that Allen is just look at the best shots and take yours in a similar fashion then you will not need CC!

Angie & Steve, if you have an opinion then voice it. Don't let a few self opiionated dip sticks put you off. I may not agree with what everyone says but I do respect their right to say it.

My own opinion is you can already put it into a thread and it doesn't count as comment on a gallery photo. So I'm not sure what the poiint would be.

I suggested this idea in the testing stages of the site - but i'll chuck it in again now.An easy way to label pictures for cc would be to add a tag to the image "cc please" or some such phrase. It would then be possible for someone to click the tag and bring up all the pictures on the same page.Might work?

Regards  Joe.

I think Allan has a good point. Having spent much time on the other site looking and commenting and helping where I could by making suggestions, as did many people. It does seem more difficult on this site for a novice photographer to get a picture looked at. The gallery (which is good) seems aimed at just posting your best shots and most that are posted are never seen by anyone as the hundreds pile in on top of them. A bit like flikr in that respect.

The old 6otb was much easier to post pictures for advise and then add to a thread a request for critique. On this new site each comment adds to the tally and if someone were to ask for help they could end up topping the most comments gallery.

I think we have lost something on the new site.......I am a little reluctant to make constructive criticism on pictures loaded to galleries by people who I don't know and haven't asked for critique or advise.

I don't know the answer but feel the strong point of this site....ie helping people improve their photography is maybe not as good as it once was.

Or is it just me ?????????

Good ideas Allan and Joe but if long standing members like Angie and Steve dare not voice opinions I dont really see the point.  I will say however if someone is openly asking for critique then they must be prepared to accept the good with the bad.

I'm surprised that some adults dare not comment and others behave like spoilt brats when told what they think is their best photo is just a mediocre snapshot.

Great Idea

I think those looking for tips and help when posting in the gallery "tag" their pic with advice and tips or something that links them to a forum board would be very helpful.

Ive spent hours trailing through this site looking at images and photos second guessing what and how they got their results.

Those that want to geniunely help can do so without commenting in the persons gallery and possibly someone getting the wrong end of the stick and starting an argument about what should be said and what not to say about critique.

So yes good idea methinks Smile

Also i see comments about long standing members blah blah blah, just because they are long standing members don't mean they have the best ideas comments and notions, sometimes you need to shake up and clear stoic attitudes.

Phil, I think your right as it looks like some are just dumping pics here willy nilly, but it could be they are encouraged to come here via a new cameras bumf, leaflets etc, and post their new camera pics without thinking its a best shot gallery. not that I think its important anyway to have your best shots only as if you are a new member here like myself and I will eventually have shots that I think are rubbish as I develop better photography techniques, its possibly a first point of contact for them as far as they are concerned, and should be encouraged.

A new forum should have new attitudes, after some reading around here Ive done it looks like before the paints dried the "old school" are sticking thier fingers in it, time to move on....................

Allan,

Why not start a thread titled CC Required, post an image within the thread, no need to have it in your gallery and won't create the scenario where it gets most commented as a result, and see how you get on. Once the thread runs its course or you have had as much responses as you require, it can be deleted and you can delete the image from your permitted storage, allowing you to upload more.

As you can see below, you can resize the image within the thread to a size hopefully large enough to view it well enough for comment to be made.

Cheers,

JM

Hi Steve.....I think you have got my point right, but this is why people who are looking for advice on how to progress their knowledge and skills will post their "best" shot in the hope that someone will suggest a better way to improve it. Unfortunately most people will now only comment on the odd shot that looks good at thumbnail size. In some ways the restriction to 6 pictures on the old site was better for new members as there were many fewer postings and people had more time to look

Personally I have never been afraid of CC and have found it to be very helpful.  I do give it sometimes such as straightening a horizon or cropping a tangent or the like, I do not feel particularly qualified to give expert advice.  I try not to be unkind and the picture has to appeal to me in the first place.  I think that the idea of a dedicated thread may be a good one as it would be used by people who really do want help or advice.  I agree that there are so many pictures on the site (and so many seem to be duplicates) that it is easy to get lost in the pile.

We are not here to purely gain nice comments on our own shots but to help each other out.  I think we have always done this pretty well, so if help is asked for why should we not respond?

Cheers

Carolyn.

Phil

I have to agree with your point about losing something on this new site.

When I originally came from the old site where I was a relatively newbie, I was expecting to receive critique on photos posted to the gallery.  Space for comments was limited on the old site, here on the new one people could post critique, advice and help on how to improve.  Unfortunately this doesn't appear to be happening, people are viewing some of the photographs, making the odd comment, some add stars though most think this is a pointless exercise.

I'm not sure there is a way to improve on this, maybe Allan, Joe and  Jims idea of having a dedicated thread could go some way to getting people to comment on photographs, if its only to say " why didn't you post this in the gallery"

I don't remember seeing anything you've said on these forums that gives anyone a hard time for expressing an opinion. But I have seen it done by a few. So in answer to your question, probably not, however if I've missed something where you have done so, then the answer is yes. Hope that makes it clear M8

Personally I think it is a good idea Allan.  To post an image in the thread would not allow a critic to view it at a higher resolution whereas in the gallery it would be visible as a bigger frame.  A CC thread with a link is a good way of drawing the attention to the shot that you want the CC on.

As for people not feeling comfortable voicing their opinion, pfffft whatever anyone else thinks.  If somebody asks for help in this way then why feel bad about commenting.  It is a personal choice though.  I would love to give CC using my very limited knowledge and ability and I would also post images that I wanted a critical eye to look over.  We all see things differently so the comments should be good and varied.

Might be worth a try but I would give this thread a few more days to better gauge the reaction to the idea.

Thanks everyone for the input and thought in the replies will keep looking and reading. Personally I have found where people have commented on my shots the comments to be helpful and meant to help and I would never take anything meant to help in the wrong way but I do understand that some are precious about their shots hence why I asked about something /somewhere were people could ask for help and others would feel happy to comment knowing that that was what as asked for. We all learn by experience and those that are kindenough to give their time trying to help should be seen as that. Also I understand that beauty is in the eye of the beholder so sometimes opinions on shots will vary but surely that only broadens horizons and may get us to see our shot /photography in a different light. And as I stated starting this threa I found it very useful to me and I am sure there are lots of others out there who would love something like this. I know we have the advanced photograhy forum but I find it hard reading through those and seeing how it will make a difference but when you get practical advice on your shots you can then go and alter them and see the results and learn from that advice and use it in future.

And I think by the replies to this thread there are plenty out there willing to help so a huge thanks to them and I am sure if we could get something like this going it can only make the community on here stronger. Almost as if we are all on a ladder one hand down to help those below us in exprience but also one hand up getting help from thse higher up the ladder than us?

Thanks for all the replies will go back to reading again now Smile

Hi Alan, this is a bit late  I know.

May I suggest that if a proper critique is required then you go to a site such as Ephotozine(it wont cost you anything)There you can have a critique on your masterpiece done by experts, not people who think they are expert. It isn't done with any malice or rudeness, but it is a down to the bone critique. They'll even take your shot and improve it as is seen fit and post it back up. You can post one shot a week for a critique on Ephotozine and in my opinion it is well worth the effort. You must be prepared though, because what you see as a wonderful presentation the Togs might not and they will let you know.

Hope this is of some help to you.

I think this is a good idea. I was only on the old site for a few months, but have to say I did tend to get more comments on the six pictures, here apart from the IHC entries, I have few comments.  I found the comments then to be very helpful.

I think it's a good idea.  I did this a few weeks ago when I took delivery of my new 100fs, putting the picture into a thread that is.  There were at least 20 replies with advice on how to overcome the difficulties I had, and how best  to move forward.

I too have found creating a thread in the forum asking for advice will get good responses - see http://www.myfinepix.co.uk/forum/1/21260.
