Top Rated

Can anybody tell me how the top rated gallery is arranged because I have 2 photos with 1 five star rating and both with 2 comments and only one of them appears in the gallery.

Thanks for any explanation, Chrissie

Well I am almost as puzzled as you Chris - I believe they do go up and down in the ratings - so it may be that the one that is there will be joined by the other, and I think the number of viewings also has a part to play (which it shouldn't as it can be falsified by a keystroke cheat). The vagaries of it were pointed out to the tech guys during testing - and I thought they had fixed it - but obviously they haven't.

I don't know how that's done but I know how to get into the most viewed ones. Post pictures of scantily clad female, there is no less then 13 on the first 2 pages. It's a bit like when you'd get the old men buying armature photographer (and not for the cameras) Wink : Wink

Thanks Angie and Louise - I've just emailed the powers that be because I have a photo with 2 five star votes and 2 comments and 27 views and it's not in the gallery but somebody's with the same votes and comments but less views is.

It could be Chris that the average star count is not 5. If you have 2, 5 stars and 1 3 star the average is only just over 4. It is the average that is important not the number of 5 stars you have.

It only has 2 star votes and both are 5, so the average is 5. The only difference between my photo and the other person's (as far as views, votes and comments goes that is) is mine has more views - comments and star average are the same.

I pointed all this out when we were Beta testing Chrissie - have a look at this one of Dave's he has (I think) 5, 5 stars and 2, 4 stars - and he isn't in the top rated - I think this is silly - total stars 33 - yet someone with 1, 5 star rating takes precedence - not logical .

I think it has something to do with the ratio of views/stars,ie,a pic with a five star rating with less views will be given a higher position in the gallery than a pic with a five star rating and many more views - in other words the percentage of people who view the pic but don't rate it comes into play.

Regards  Joe.

I think it might have something to do with the date the picture was posted in the gallery. I might be very wrong but the top rated pictures do not appear to stay in the gallery for more than about a month at the most (although they still appear in our own personal gallery). It is probably just as well because it gives other people the chance to move up the highest rated pages.

Angie, David's photo is in the top rated but not until you get to page 19.

I know Chris - that's why I think there is a very difficult set of 'rules' for getting them there - i have a couple with less comments than he has starred comments. It should work automatically (to my way of thinking) so that when more stars are added to a photo they move - at the moment it is static.

I agree entirely, Angie, it doesn't seem to be very fair. How are they deciding comp winners now, do member ratings have any influence?

Well in the rules and guidelines it says they do - but that also doesn't seem fair as some folk give willy nilly 5's and other give no stars at all.

I suppose it's something along the lines of how search engines rank websites. There are countless theories about how it's done and many companies making a living out of claiming to understand it, but the likes of Google are very secretive about how it works. Understandably so too. You can be sure people would find a way to boost ratings artificially if these things were public knowledge.
