HS30 viewfinder

I have just bought an HS30 bridge camera and was shocked at how bad the viewfinder is. There is some adjustment with a thumbwheel, but you often get ghosting and generally it is never much better than poor.  Have other people found this? Or have I got a faulty camera?

The diopter at the side should get the viewfinder in good focus. If it doesn't then you may have a faulty camera.

If you wear strong prescription glasses it could be out of the diopter's range.

In which case you will have to view the camera with your glasses on.

Hi Terry.

Check yer glasses prescription against the dioptre adjustment on the camera. Which eye ye use will determine the correction needed. Ah was able tae buy a dioptre eyepiece corrector for my Sony (my dioptre adjustment was too low for my favoured eye). They are available in different strengths and just push into the eyepiece.

If the adjustment on the camera goes up tae - e.g. +3 and the prescription for yer preferred eye is +4, then ye'd need a minimum +1 eyepiece corrector. Ah bought a +1.5 for mine tae allow for fine adjustment. It'll tell ye in the manual what the incremental clicks are e.g. 1/3 or1/2 etc.

Ah don't know if they're available for your camera. Check with Fuji or on the web. Cool

Thanks for comments, but I don't wear glasses.  I have no problems with the viewfinder on my Nikon DSLR or on my Canon SLR. Sorry, you lost me with the diopter reference, I thought that was a unit of measurement. What is really disconcerting about the HS30 viewfinder on my camera is not just the ghosting and problems with focus, but the really poor quality of the view.  The contrast is very high - things are either too light or too dark.  As a result the colours are really washed out.  This is all pretty distracting when you are trying to frame a scene accurately, and makes it impossible to do fast.  If I had bought from a camera shop I would take it back and ask if this was really the best I could get with this camera, but I got it from Amazon.  It doesn't sound as if you have these problems with your HS30 Edy?  Is that right?

Sorry Terry,

ah misread yer post and assumed it was a dioptre adjustment problem. Ah'm also assuming that yev tried adjusting the LCD/EVF brightness? The HS viewfinders are notorious for low contrast not high? Try setting the brightness at 0 or -1.

Evfs are very susceptible tae ghosting...panning, tilting, fast-moving objects will all cause this. It's the price ye pay for non-optical VFs.

It may still be a camera fault, yev got 30 day return if ye bought from Amazon. Cool

Thanks to everyone who commented on this thread.  I also swapped some emails with a guy who weote a magazine review on the camera.  On the basis of all feedback I received I decided that the viewfinder on the HS30 I had was definitely faulty so I returned the camera.  I have since replaced it with an HS28.  The quality of the viewfinder is not brilliant, but it does confirm that the HS30 had problems.  I also had a problem with the RAW Convertor software, and a different issue with the 28 - both on separate threads.  I haven't bought Fuji before.  This range has a great lens, but Fuji really need to look to their quality assurance!
