I added this topic earlier http://www.myfinepix.co.uk/forum/8/74850 , because some people were a bit confused by what "Add this" actually does Wink

It seems to me, since it's not necessary to be logged in to use the share button, that this facility makes it easier for anyone on the Internet to share any individual members post on this site to the world wide web which is rather more than a member choosing to share his or her own contributions. If there was an include me out button I, for one, would would choose that option.

I am not at ease with this addition.

As I see it, it's just making it a little easier to do things you can already do. By posting something here, you've already made it available to the world.

Can't see myself using it, but apart from cluttering up the page a bit more, I guess it's "progess."

Please tell me that is a windup? Did you not read the link I put n my reply?

Your posts are shared all over the internet as it is, so what exactly would you be opting out of?

Please tell me that is a windup?

No it isn't.

This is an extract from the Terms Of Service, Section 19, Linking To Our Site; “nor may you create a link to any part of our site other than the home page”.

I believe this share facility breaches that understanding.

I am fully aware that it has always been possible to copy and paste links of any members contributions but surely that would breach the TOS.

I am also aware that a number of members are members of other sites, such as flickr, and that they post links from this site to that content. This is allowed for in the TOS.

Paragraph two of this thread implies that the choice to share is that of the contributor where it says "for you to share your blogs, photos, articles and even forum posts". This statement is misleading, you and your should read anyone and anyone’s.

The addition of this link is a presumption that implies every member of this site invites anyone and everyone to create a link directly to their contributions on this site in breach of TOS.

The inclusion of this share button under my pictures allows anyone to infer that I am inviting them to share links directly to my contributions beyond this site that makes me feel uneasy and as I said at the start I think it breaches the Terms Of Service.

I am not a member of any other online sites, this is the only place I post pictures and I have no links anywhere that lead directly to any of my images. I do not wish to extend an invitation to anyone else to establish such links. The only link I have set up is the link to the MyFinePixUK Home Page in My Favourites. In the meantime I have deleted all of my images except the two that relate to the current competition and express a wish that no links other than those within this site be established.

I hope this makes clear the way I feel.

I would draw the attention of FUJIFILM to the fact that firewalls can block the display of the share button and hence an indeterminate number of members will not see it.

Cambium does make a very good point there. The Share button Fuji have added does indeed appear to encourage people to breach Fuji's own Terms Of Service if they actually use it.

Needs the TOS updating (and everyone to re-register) or a large disclaimer on the button along the lines of Press Here to Self Destruct?

Just found this...

These TOS may be updated by MyFinePix from time to time without notice to you. You are expected to check this page from time to time to take notice of any changes we made, as they are binding on you.

Better try to activate the button G! Smile

Well if that isn't an over reaction to a simple share button, I don't know what is.

Those terms are Fuji UK's terms. By placing the share button on sections of the site, they are granting you permission to share those pages via the sites listed by "Add This". Their terms regarding you "creating" a link yourself, still stands.

If you are that worried that someone may link to something you have said in public, I would switch your PC off, and throw it out of the window. Fact is google links to every single post and image you have uploaded. And the google cache also lets people see the things you have deleted too.

Over reaction possibly.....

And this is Fuji UK's site. By registering and ticking the I agree to the site terms of service box, you are saying you have read and accept all 4,596 words of it. How many people actually did that?

I would argue that just by placing the button there, Fuji are not actually granting you permission to contravene their TOS. Of course, you could argue that they were just stupid to assume you wouldn't use it because it breaks the TOS, but I don't want to venture into that legal minefield!

Contrary to how it may sound, I am not opposed to it, but equally can appreciate how others may be concerned by its introduction. I just wouldn't use it or see any benefit from it, but that's just my personal choice.

Hate to point out the obvious, but by using add this, you are not creating a link yourself. It is "add this" that is creating the links via the fuji site. All you are doing by using add this, is granting the app/script permission to post a link on the site you select. So it is NOT breaching Fuji's terms at all.

The benefits are for those who use these networking sites, and also Fuji.

So you have no copyright over any pictures you take with your digital camera because it was the software in the camera that created the image. You just pointed it and pressed the button and didn't actually create the image yourself.

We could argue this till the cows come home, but I do agree with your sentence about the benefits...

Fuji UK placed this feature on the site, and therefore they are making it available for people to use. They are therefore granting you the right to use the "add this" feature of the site. It has nothing to do with copyright, or in anyway similar to your example.

If we are going to get in to T&C's, maybe people should read this one:

With respect to all other Content you elect to post to other publicly accessible areas of the Services, you grant MyFinePix the royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive and fully sub-licensable right and licence to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform and display such Content (in whole or part) worldwide and/or to incorporate it in other works in any form, media, or technology now known or later developed.

Chris

I mean no offence by this comment, but I would just like to know why you are expounding the virtues of these links that have been added to this site. Surely all we need to know is that it they have been put in place and then leave it up to the members to decide if they want to use this facility or not. We certainly do not need someone more or less telling us that we need to use these links to improve our use of the site, because I for one am quite happy with the site as it was. Are you on the fuji payroll LOL

Wally, I've never said people had to use it. The initial reaction to twitter was that it is full of morons speaking about nothing, and of no use to the site. So I tried to clear up that misconception, as it was clear it has been of value within hours of going live.

The initial reaction to the "Add this" feature was.... well, just ridiculous. All kind of theories about what it did and how it did it. People deleting their profiles because of copyrights, and so on. It was like some kind of mass hysteria, based on the word "Share", and what people assumed that meant.

All I can say is, thank god Fuji didn't put a "Aliens have arrived" notice on the site. We would have seen people running outside with "Welcome to earth" signs, and preachers telling us the world is going to end at midnight. PMSL

Ok Chris, I will concede that the 'Add This' button could be useful. As long as there is the option to add it to the garbage.

You mean millions of people around the world want to look at my photo's?

Like yeah.

It might be an improvement on the 27 people on Fuji who have currently looked at them.

Why shouldn't they monty? The whole purpose is to share links etc, so more and more people come to view the site. In turn you get more and more views, and more comments/feedback.

Chris - I can understand why some people would see the glare of publicity as attractive and would want all the networking they can get. But ........You Cannot Be Seeerious ..... if you think more people means more comments - it just means more photos to ignore and more people to ignore them! The masses of folk who are now members of this site rarely look at anything.

Many were the problems with MyFuji but every month without fail someone (and usually several) reached 200 comments (no idea how many views 'cos it didn't say) But now we are lucky to get 100 comments and around the same for views. And I don't know in comparison how many entries each month - I would guess there are about 3 times as many now as then.

Probably at a time when you were much too young to remember but there was some years back a saying - 'Small is Beautiful'!

I agree with Angie. It seems that Fuji want to pull more and more people in from the social networking sites. OK that's their choice, but I doubt it will improve either onsite interaction (too many pics) or photographic quality (loadsa 'Facebook pics').

I think this site has gone downhill of late. I think this is due to a large number of excellent photographers departing for 'pastures new'. I doubt that Twitter will bring them back - though if Fuji had sorted out some of the frequently-reported problems (like the HomePage glitch that  discourages some people from commenting) they might perhaps have hung on a little longer!

Please don't get me wrong Chris. I have nothing against progress or Twitter or any other network and I certainly have no personal problem with you. My gripe is with Fuji. With all their promises they have done very little to improve the quality of THIS site for their members.

This is probably the most active photography sit around, hoping Twitter will add to the site, I feel is very short sighted.

I am repeating this from the UK Chat forum as Jen has said that she will delete her thread in which I posted it and I think it needs repeating as I may have upset one or two folk

.........................................................................................................................

As it was me who used the word Moron I will apologise for its use when discussing Twitter and the members of this site. My use of the word moron was to describe those air-heads in the media who are continually informing uninterested parties that they can be found on Twitter. It is the same mentality which informs me of this, that discusses a footballers private life and causes him to resign from the captaincy of the England football team. I don't follow football, but I used to and I know that the likes of Peter Osgood, Jimmy Grieves were certainly not angels but their private life was their private life and as long as they didn't break the law it remained that way. These were the morons of whom I spoke - I think that most folk on here, if they can take a photo immediately rule themselves out of the moron category. So I apologise if anyone thought I was referring to them.
