Yes, I used the macro setting. I was very close, but yet, I used zoom too.

A like from me. I dont think you always have to get real close up and super microscopic detail emerge on a macro for a pleasing image. I would offer a suggestion of another crop to you though to take the subject of centre and change the image balance in regard to thirds etc.
From your original above, to this below. Note i have kept your original dimensions when cropping. Btw, nice sharp shot again allowing these images to be resized during cropping.
Like you, i tend to shoot to use an image full frame but part of that means you have to change the main focal cross hairs point off the centre one to one of the other nodes to better compose your shots. This will assist in not having to crop yet using the golden mean points in the rule of thirds.
